How the hourly rate is calculated

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year). Most full-time salaries assume 52 paid weeks; if unpaid leave applies, lowering the weeks figure gives a more accurate effective hourly rate for the weeks actually worked.

Common full-time schedules

SalaryScheduleHourly
$40,00040 hrs/wk, 52 wks$19.23
$60,00040 hrs/wk, 52 wks$28.85
$80,00040 hrs/wk, 52 wks$38.46

Frequently asked questions

Should I subtract taxes to compare to a take-home hourly job?
This shows gross hourly pay, matching how most job listings quote rates. Take-home pay depends on tax bracket, benefits, and location.

How do I account for unpaid vacation?
Reduce the "paid weeks per year" figure — e.g. 50 instead of 52 for two unpaid weeks off — and the hourly rate adjusts to reflect it.

From salary to an hourly equivalent

Converting an annual salary to an hourly rate requires an assumption about working hours. This calculator makes that assumption explicit so the result can be used as a comparison rather than mistaken for a guaranteed pay rate.

The common assumption

A simple full-time estimate often uses 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, or 2,080 hours annually. Dividing an annual salary by that number gives an hourly equivalent before taxes and deductions.

Why your real rate can differ

Paid vacation, unpaid leave, overtime, bonuses, commissions, variable schedules and part-time arrangements can change the effective hourly value. If you know your actual paid hours, use them instead of relying on a standard assumption.

Gross versus take-home pay

The calculator works with gross compensation. Income tax, payroll taxes, benefits, retirement contributions and other deductions affect take-home pay and are not included in a simple salary-to-hourly conversion.
